Epilogue

Johnna - One Year Later

“Are you sure I look ok?” I ask for probably the thirtieth time, inspecting myself in the full-length mirror. I’m wearing a green evening dress that’s a lot tighter than what I’m used to, but Aiden picked it out just for me and so I was going to wear it.

“Johnna, how can you even ask?” he says, coming up behind me and running his hands over my breasts, then my hips. “I’m not even sure I should let you leave the house looking this delicious. I might not be able to keep my hands off of you.”

I want to tell him we don’t have to go, but Smoulder has had a great year and I know it’s, in large part, due to Aiden’s amazing photography. I can’t take this celebration away from him.

So I try to convince myself that I look ok, and that I won’t stick out like a sore thumb.

I see Aiden’s smile disappear and twirl around to look him in the face.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“I just can’t keep from thinking it’s missing something,” he says, glancing all over me. I can’t imagine what. My makeup and hair are professionally done, I’m wearing shoes that cost more than most people make in a month, and my jewelry is beautiful.

“Oh, here it is,” he says, pulling a box out of his pocket as he sinks down on one knee.

I just stare at him for a moment, completely blanking on why he might be kneeling in front of me.

“Johnna, will you marry me?” he asks, his brow furrowing as if he thinks I might actually turn him down.

“Yes. Of course, Aiden!” I say, and then promptly burst into tears.

He stands up, slides the diamond solitaire on my trembling finger, and kisses me.

“Just for the sake of my ego, those are happy tears, right?” he says, tilting my chin up so he can look in my eyes.

“The happiest,” I say, managing not to sob through those two words. “I love you so much, and I can’t wait to be your wife.”

And he pulls me into a deep kiss that very nearly makes us late for the party.
